When we bought our house the center island had granite so i hated to rip it out when replacing the rest of the kitchen counters so i chose a granite to coordinate withe the colors of the center island.

The gray tones in the marble island top pick up the charcoal wall color which is in turn complemented by the black granite countertops along the room s perimeter.
If you choose a marble island with cool gray veining dark gray or black granite is ideal for perimeter countertops.

I chose a simpler granite without much veining actually it s black called ooba tooba not sure of the spelling.
For example if you have more warm earth tones in your kitchen then you might want to put that absolute black granite on the island and use a warm stone like golden sparkle granite on the perimeter.
Just be sure to check out the slab or a sample in person before making a purchase for your granite kitchen island as granite is a major investment that cannot be altered easily or cheaply.
